“Parangtritis Beach is a romantic sunset viewing spot and is widely known as the gateway to the mystical oceanic kingdom of Ratu Kidul according to Javanese legend”
Parangtritis Beach is located approximately 27 kilometers south of Yogyakarta city center, making it one of the region’s major landmarks and most popular beaches. The beach is characterized by its long stretch of wide, dark-colored sand and is part of the southern Java coast which faces relatively strong waves. While swimming is highly discouraged, the vast panorama of the Indian Ocean makes this a perfect place for relaxation and sightseeing.
What makes Parangtritis unique is its cultural significance and rich folklore. It is traditionally believed to be the entrance to the sacred realm of Ratu Kidul (Nyi Roro Kidul), the revered ruler of the South Sea in Javanese mythology. Furthermore, near the beach lies Gumuk Pasir Parangkusumo (Parangkusumo Sand Dunes), a rare natural phenomenon in the tropics. These dunes are formed by volcanic sediment carried from Mount Merapi and deposited by wind currents.
The main activity at Parangtritis Beach is enjoying the evening; watching the sunset is an especially magical time. Visitors can rent 4x4 ATVs or take a horse-drawn carriage ride (Bendi/Delman) to explore the expansive beach. In addition to beach activities, the nearby Paragliding Hill (Bukit Paralayang Watugupit) offers absolutely spectacular panoramic views of the beach and the ocean.
Come and experience the beauty of Parangtritis Beach at dusk, and surrender to the sound of the waves and the enchantment of the Queen of the South Sea at this remarkable spot.
