“Mount Ngelanggeran is distinguished by its unique granite and slate rock landscape, an ancient geological site registered as a Global Geopark.”
Mount Ngelanggeran Volcano is an extinct volcano, approximately 60 to 70 million years old, and forms part of an ancient volcanic network stretching across the Gunungkidul area. Historically, it is believed to have been the center of an ancient Javanese kingdom. The peak offers a wide-ranging vista of the surrounding area, including a view of the Kali Biru Reservoir, making it a popular destination for an easy and quick hike.
What gives this volcano its distinctive charm is the spectacular rock formations, composed of slate and granite that have been naturally eroded into various shapes. There are several small caves and viewpoints along the trekking route, including the famous Sunrise Viewpoint. It is also home to a village that preserves the traditional customs and way of life of the Javanese people. Mount Ngelanggeran is a UNESCO Global Geopark, offering invaluable geological knowledge.
The atmosphere at Ngelanggeran is tranquil and welcoming, especially during the cool early morning and evening. The hike to the summit takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, which is considered relatively undemanding. The path is well-maintained, with wooden stairs and ropes assisting in some sections. Visitors can choose to camp overnight in the designated area to experience the breathtaking stargazing and morning sunrise.
The ancient rock landscape and 360-degree views make this a photographer's paradise, especially for capturing the sunrise and sunset casting golden light onto the fields and rock clusters. It is an ideal spot for couples seeking romance or nature lovers and artists looking for inspiration from this geological magnificence.
