“Notable for the traditional Masangin ritual, where people try to walk blindfolded between the two sacred banyan trees, symbolizing the blend of local culture and belief”
AlunAlun Kidul, also known as Alkid, means Southern Square"in Javanese and serves as the rear yard of the Yogyakarta Sultan's Palace. Historically, this area was used as a training ground for royal soldiers and was part of the funeral procession route for Sultans before their burial at Pajimatan Imogiri. Today, Alkid is a vital center for social and cultural activities, characterized by a large open space surrounded by banyan trees, clearly maintaining the traditional Javanese atmosphere
The most unique and appealing activity is the tradition of Masangin, where participants attempt to walk blindfolded directly through the center of the two large, sacred banyan trees located in the middle of the square. Legend says that only those with a pure heart can succeed, and they will be blessed with their wishes coming true. Although seemingly simple, many people surprisingly miss the target. The atmosphere at Alkid becomes especially lively at night, when people relax on mats spread along the square's edges or enjoy riding decorative light-up bicycles or the brightly colored Odong-Odong vehicles.
In addition to the fun activities, Alun-Alun Kidul is also a hub for excellent Yogyakarta street food. Numerous vendors set up Angkringan stalls selling local snacks and beverages, such as grilled corn, toasted bread, and hot drinks like Wedang Ronde or Wedang Bajigur. Visiting here in the evening and night is not just for relaxation but also a great opportunity to truly experience the cheerful nocturnal life of the people of Yogyakarta.
