“Largest indoor market in Hanoi Great place for souvenirs, silk, and local crafts Upper floors sell clothes; ground floor offers food and dry goods Located near Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter”
Dong Xuan Market Built in 1889, Dong Xuan Market is Hanoi’s oldest and largest covered market, originally constructed during the French colonial era. The building features a mix of colonial and Vietnamese architecture, with tall arched roofs and a spacious layout covering more than 6,000 square meters.
Historically, the market served as a trading hub connecting local Vietnamese merchants with Chinese and French traders. Although it was severely damaged by a fire in 1994, it has since been restored while preserving its traditional charm and lively atmosphere.
Today, the market is packed with stalls selling clothing, silk fabrics, shoes, handicrafts, souvenirs, and a wide range of Vietnamese street foods such as Bánh mì and Phở. It’s a must-visit destination for both tourists and locals seeking authentic sights, sounds, and flavors of Hanoi.
On weekends, the Dong Xuan Night Market lights up the streets with colorful lamps, live folk music, and hundreds of street vendors, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere that showcases the true spirit of the Old Quarter.
