“Hanoi’s largest freshwater lake, covering over 500 hectares Surrounded by lakeside cafes and restaurants with relaxing views Close to Tran Quoc Pagoda – the oldest pagoda in Hanoi One of the best sunset viewpoints in the city Activities include cycling, boating, and photography”
West Lake (Hồ Tây) is the largest freshwater lake in Hanoi, with a geological history of over 2,000 years. Often called the “green heart” of the capital, it helps regulate the city’s temperature and provides a serene natural escape within the bustling metropolis. Covering an area of around 500 hectares with a shoreline stretching over 17 kilometers, the lake is one of Hanoi’s most picturesque landmarks.
Surrounding the lake are many ancient temples and cultural sites, most notably Trấn Quốc Pagoda, built in the 6th century, which stands as the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi. It’s beautifully located on a small islet connected by a bridge and offers stunning views, especially during sunset.
The lake’s perimeter is lined with restaurants, cafés, bars, and hotels, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors to relax, dine, or enjoy a drink while watching the golden light reflecting off the water. Visitors can also cycle around the lake or rent paddle boats to enjoy its calm and scenic surroundings.
During spring and early summer (May–July), lotus flowers bloom across the lake, particularly near Nhat Tan and Quang Ba villages, transforming the area into a breathtaking sea of pink blossoms—perfect for photography and sightseeing.
Nearby attractions include the InterContinental Hanoi Westlake Hotel, West Lake Water Park (Công viên nước Hồ Tây), and Thanh Niên Street, a beautiful causeway that separates West Lake from Trúc Bạch Lake and offers one of the best panoramic views in the city.
