“It is a popular spot for enjoying 360-degree views of the Thung Talay Chedi, especially in the early morning when the sun rises and hot air balloons begin to soar into the sky.”

Shwe Leik Too Pagoda is one of over 2,000 pagodas remaining from the great Bagan Kingdom in Myanmar. Although it is not as large as other major pagodas, such as Shwesandaw Pagoda or Dhammayangyi Pagoda, it is nonetheless significant for its location and its traditional charm of tranquility.

History and Architecture

Shwe Leik Too Pagoda features the bell-shaped architecture of medieval Bagan, consisting of a multi-tiered square base supporting a bell-shaped pagoda on top. The pagoda is constructed of sturdy, traditional clay bricks, demonstrating its resistance to time and weather for thousands of years.

  • Composition: Pagodas typically consist of a circumambulated base that allows for a circumambulation (access to the pagoda is currently restricted) and a small chamber or altar containing Buddha images inside or below.

  • Antique Charm: Since the pagodas have not undergone extensive restoration, unlike some major pagodas, Shwe Lai Tu retains its weathered brick surfaces and moss-covered walls, offering a truly mystical and tranquil feel. This contrasts with the stunning new gilded temples.

Importance as a Viewpoint

In the years before the pagoda was banned from climbing, Shwe Lai Tu was highly popular with photographers and tourists seeking new perspectives on the pagoda field.

  • Panoramic Viewpoint: The pagoda sits on a relatively elevated site, away from the larger temple complex, offering clear views of the pagoda field, extending beyond its boundless reach. This is particularly evident to the east and north, where numerous hot air balloons soar above the morning dew.

  • Easy Accessibility: Despite its location within a pagoda field, Shwe Lai Tu Pagoda is relatively easy to reach by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, as it is located just off the main road connecting Nyaung-U and Old Bagan. This makes it a great option for those seeking a more tranquil setting than crowded viewpoints.

  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Compared to the main official viewpoints, this pagoda offers a more private and secluded atmosphere, allowing for a truly captivating sunrise or sunset (especially if visitors are permitted nearby).

Current Restrictions: Despite its history as an excellent viewpoint, it's important to note that Myanmar authorities are currently enforcing strict climbing restrictions on all ancient structures to prevent damage. Shwe Lai Tu Pagoda is therefore important as a prime photo stop from above and a symbol of Bagan's commitment to preserving its World Heritage Sites.

How to Get There
  • From Nyaung-U, it takes approximately 10–15 minutes by electric bicycle or local taxi.

  • From Old Bagan, it takes approximately 10 minutes by electric bicycle.

  • The road is a dirt road with some minor dirt and gravel, so drive with caution.

Travel Tips
  • For sunrise viewing: Arrive before dawn (around 5:00 AM) to secure the best spots, as the pagoda is a popular spot for viewing.

  • Dress Code: As this is a religious site, please dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. Shoes and socks must be removed before entering the temple grounds.

  • Entrance Tickets: A Bagan Archaeological Zone Pass is required, which is the only ticket available to enter the pagodas and temples in Bagan.

Admission Fees:

  • Pagoda Admission Fee: No admission fee for pagodas alone.

  • Bagan Archaeological Site Admission Fee: A combined ticket is required for foreigners. Currently, the price is approximately 25,000 kyat, or approximately $12-20 USD (prices may fluctuate depending on exchange rates and time of year).

Opening Hours:

  • Open all the time: Usually open from pre-dawn (around 5:00 AM) to allow visitors to view the sunrise, and until after sunset.

  • Pagoda Climbing Rules: Most importantly, the authorities have banned climbing on most pagodas for safety reasons and to preserve the historic site.

  • Alternatively, the authorities have provided several newly constructed mounds or large viewing platforms for safe sunrise and sunset viewing.
