“Sadan Cave is a large natural cave with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, nestled amidst lush greenery, perfect for those who love exploration and adventure.”
Sadan Cave is one of the greatest pilgrimage sites and natural attractions in Karen State and is the symbol of Pha-an. The cave itself is a massive limestone cave, formed by water erosion over thousands of years, and has evolved into a sacred site housing numerous sacred objects.
Religious and Historical Features
-
Buddha Statues and Stupas: The entrance and main chamber are lined with large and small Buddha statues embedded in the walls and crevices. Small ancient stupas are also built in various corners of the cave, reflecting the Burmese people's long-standing devotion to Buddhism. Shoes must be removed upon entering the cave, as is customary for entering sacred places.
-
Decoration: The cave's hall is illuminated with colored lights, illuminating the Buddha statues and stupas, creating a solemn and reverent atmosphere.
Getting Inside the Cave
-
The Long Walkway Through the Cave: A highlight of Sadan Cave is the 2,260-foot (approximately 700-meter) long walkway through darkness and into lighted areas. Most of the path is on smooth sand or concrete, making it easy to walk on. However, some sections may experience water dripping or become soggy due to humidity.
-
The Magic of Stalactites and Stalagmites: Throughout the path, visitors will be captivated by the natural beauty of the massive, imposing stalactites and stalagmites. A highlight is the large, steep, and expansive chamber, which feels like an underground cathedral.
-
The Exit to the Outside World: After walking through the darkness to the end, you emerge into a vast rice field and a small, tranquil lake. This stunning view contrasts with the atmosphere inside the cave. Small wooden rowboats are available for use, allowing you to paddle across the lake back to the starting point at the front of the cave, providing a comprehensive and unique travel experience.
How to Get There
- The cave entrance can be reached from Hpa-An town by car or motorbike, taking about 30–40 minutes. After that, you have to walk inside the cave for about 10–15 minutes. Along the way, you will see beautiful mountain and natural scenery.
