“The highlight is the golden pagoda atop a limestone cliff, set amidst a calm body of water, with a backdrop of stunning karst mountains, including the majestic Mount Zwekabin.”

Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda is one of the most important landmarks in Hpa-an, Karen State, Myanmar. It sits within a large pond that was built as a small dam to store water for the community. Its distinctive feature, making it a must-see destination, is the tall limestone pillars that rise atop a small island, with a golden pagoda atop them. The pagoda is awe-inspiring, seemingly floating on a sharp rocky outcrop.

History and Beliefs

Local monks tell stories that the area was once used as a meditation center for renowned Vipassana monks. It also houses an important pavilion where a renowned monk once resided for a long period, making it sacred to the people of Hpa-an and their followers. Furthermore, locals believe the island possesses a "peaceful energy," making it ideal for meditation. Even today, villagers and monks can often be seen meditating around the pond.

Surrounding Landscape

The entire pagoda sits on a rocky foundation, forming a "karst tower," the result of hundreds of years of wind, water, and natural erosion. A concrete bridge connects the area from the mainland to the small island. Visitors can stroll around the tranquil pond, where they'll find wooden pavilions, local chicken coops, and Buddhist statues.

The pond surrounding the pagoda creates beautiful reflections—especially in the early morning and evening, when light filters through from behind Mount Zwekabin, creating the "double reflection" image that's a popular photo opportunity for tourists.
