Mount Zwegabin is a karst limestone mountain, 722 meters (2,369 feet) above sea level, and holds both religious and adventure tourism significance. The ascent is a renowned endurance test in Pha-an.
The Ascent
- Distance and Steepness: The entire ascent is a steep, concrete staircase, with approximately 3,600 steps from the base to the summit.

- The most popular main climbing route starts at Lumbini Garden, located on the west side of the mountain.
Route Options:

West Side (Lumbini Garden): This is the longer, less steep route and is the preferred route for most visitors. This is especially true for those seeking sunrise views, as it is the side where the sun rises (even though it is blocked by the mountain itself).

East Side: This is a shorter, steeper, and narrower route. Some tourists choose this route for a faster descent.

Monasteries and Pagodas: The mountaintop houses a sacred golden monastery and pagoda. These small but peaceful temples are a popular pilgrimage destination. This pagoda is believed to contain a relic of the Buddha's hair.

How to Get There

From Pha An: You can rent a motorbike/scooter (approximately 6,000 kyat for 24 hours) or take a taxi/tuk-tuk (approximately 4,000 kyat per trip) to reach the base of the mountain.

Travel Tips

Early morning climb: Start your climb around 4:30 AM to 5:00 AM to reach the summit in time for sunrise and avoid the midday heat.

Bring water and a flashlight: Plenty of drinking water (at least 1.5 liters) is essential. Bring a flashlight (or phone light), as some parts of the stairs can be completely dark.

Beware of monkeys: Monkeys are common in the temple area at the summit. Keep food and belongings securely hidden.

Accommodation: Temple accommodations used to be available for tourists (for a donation of approximately 5,000 kyat). However, it is reported that foreigners are no longer allowed to stay overnight.
