“Walk around and admire traditional costumes, tools, musical instruments, and statues of mythical animals associated with the Kayah people.”

Loikaw Cultural Museum, established in 1990, is the most important knowledge center in Kayah State, home to the Kayah people, also known as the Red Karen in Thailand, as well as nine other ethnic subgroups in the area.

The museum building is systematically divided into several exhibition zones, focusing on the traditional lifestyles, traditions, and local wisdom of various ethnic groups, including the Kayah, Kayan, Kayaw, Khakeaw, White Karen, Pa-O, and others.

Main Exhibits:

  • Costume and Textiles: Displays the colorful traditional costumes of each tribe, distinctly differentiated by symbols and weaving patterns, as well as silver and brass jewelry that indicate social status.

  • Agricultural and Hunting Tools: Displays tools used in shifting cultivation and a life of dependence on nature, such as knives, axes, rice cultivation equipment, and animal traps.

  • Traditional Musical Instruments: Displays a fascinating collection of musical instruments, particularly the "Bo-the," a single-stringed Kayah lute played during important festivals. and other bamboo musical instruments.

  • Beliefs and Traditions: This section focuses on the spiritual beliefs and rituals associated with the city pillars and major annual festivals, such as the City Pillar Festival, an important worship ceremony for blessings of bountiful harvests. It also features displays of mythical creatures of the tribes.

The museum is therefore an excellent resource for researchers and tourists seeking a deeper understanding of the cultural roots and ethnic diversity of Kayah State before embarking on a journey to experience the authentic lives of the various ethnic communities.
