“Over 1,200 perfectly cone-shaped hills Turns chocolate brown during the dry season Panoramic viewpoint at Carmen Town UNESCO World Heritage tentative site Great for photography and nature lovers”

The Chocolate Hills are one of the most iconic landmarks in the Philippines, located in the heart of Bohol Island. These geological formations consist of over 1,200 cone-shaped hills spread across more than 50 square kilometers. During the dry season, the grass covering them turns brown, giving them a chocolate-like appearance that inspired their name.

Formed through the weathering of marine limestone over thousands of years, the hills are a testament to Bohol’s unique geological history. In the rainy season, the hills turn lush green, transforming the landscape into a surreal natural scene that fascinates scientists and travelers alike.

The main viewpoint is located in Carmen, where visitors can climb a series of steps to reach a panoramic deck that offers breathtaking views of the hills stretching to the horizon. There is also a smaller viewing area in Sagbayan Peak for those seeking a quieter perspective.

Local folklore adds a magical touch to the Chocolate Hills. One legend tells of two giants who fought for days, throwing stones and sand at each other until they grew tired and became friends — the hills are said to be the remains of their battle.

Today, the Chocolate Hills are a protected national geological monument and a must-visit attraction in Bohol. The area has developed visitor facilities, including souvenir shops, a café, and an information center that explains the formation and conservation of these natural wonders.
