“Covers approximately 85 square kilometers Popular activities: ATV rides, sandboarding, photography Scenic views of sand dunes with mountains and sea Featured in films and commercials”
Ilocos Norte Sand Dunes is located in the northern part of Ilocos Norte Province. The extensive dune system stretches for tens of kilometers, primarily spanning the coastal areas between Paoay and Laoag City. The most popular section for activities is often referred to as the La Paz Sand Dunes, a formally designated protected landscape.
The dunes are not only vast but also geologically unique: they are formed by sediment deposited by nearby rivers and carried north by strong ocean currents, then driven inland by powerful monsoon winds, creating a dynamic, shifting desert terrain. The entire system covers an area of approximately 85 square kilometers (33 sq mi).
ATV riding is the most famous activity, providing an exhilarating experience as tourists navigate the high, steep dunes, enjoying panoramic views of the mountains, the expansive sand, and the West Philippine Sea. The tours are usually run by local cooperatives, ensuring safety (mandatory helmets and guides) and contributing directly to the local economy.
The best time for the ATV tours is the late afternoon, concluding with a spectacular sunset viewing over the sea, which transforms the orange-brown sand into a rich, golden color. Besides ATVs, sandboarding is a popular, thrilling activity allowing visitors to slide down the steep slopes.
The combination of dunes, mountains, and the sea provides excellent photography opportunities. The cinematic landscape has also been used as filming locations for popular Filipino movies and commercials. Visitors should take care of the hot sand during midday and bring adequate sun protection.
Nearby accommodations and local restaurants offer convenient places to stay and enjoy local cuisine, making it easy to combine high-energy outdoor adventure with comfort.
