“Approximately 1.3 kilometers long, spanning coastal cliffs and mountains Part of the Maharlika Highway (AH26), a major northern Luzon route Offers stunning mountain and sea views, especially at sunrise and sunset Symbol of engineering excellence and infrastructure development in the Philippines”

Patapat Viaduct was built to address traffic and geographical challenges along the northern coast of Ilocos Norte, near the boundary of Cagayan Province. The rugged coastline, characterized by steep mountains and dangerous cliffs of the North Cordillera Central mountain range, previously made road construction and travel difficult and prone to rock slides.

The bridge stretches about 1.3 kilometers and is a massive concrete structure that connects to the Maharlika Highway (AH26), the main national route linking Northern Luzon to other regions. This makes the viaduct crucial for transportation and local economic activity and is often referred to locally as the "Viaduct of the North."

The viaduct is a major engineering landmark built approximately 31 meters (102 feet) above sea level. Its elevated, curved design allows the structure to cling securely to the steep cliffside, demonstrating engineering excellence built to withstand strong coastal winds and vibrations from the challenging terrain. It successfully bypasses the previously dangerous, narrow road sections.

Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the strikingly blue waters of Pasaleng Bay and the rugged mountains of Northern Luzon. It is a favorite spot for sunrise and sunset photography, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when the light dramatically hits the structure and the sea.

The viaduct also plays a vital role in tourism and economic development by facilitating the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, allowing visitors to access the far northwestern coast of the Philippines, including nearby attractions like Saud Beach and the Bangui Windmills. It is a must-visit for those interested in scenic coastal drives and impressive engineering achievements.
