Kalanggaman Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the municipality of Palompon, Leyte Province. Its name, "Kalanggaman," is derived from the local dialect word meaning "bird," which perfectly describes the island's unique appearance—featuring a spectacularly long sandbar extending outwards on both sides, resembling a giant seagull with open wings.
The island is famous for its long stretches of pristine white sand and incredibly clear, turquoise water. Visitors can relax on the beach, swim in the tranquil sea, or walk along the famous sandbar which is the island's signature feature. Note that the length of the sandbar is highly dependent on the tide.
The island is a beautiful snorkeling and diving spot, known for its vibrant coral reefs and schools of colorful fish. Divers can enjoy observing the abundant marine life and capturing underwater photos in the protected waters.
Access to the island is strictly regulated and requires a mandatory 1.5 boat ride via chartered boat from the Palompon port. To maintain its pristine condition, the local government strictly enforces a daily limit on visitors
Kalanggaman Island is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape from the city, with pristine nature and tranquility. Facilities on the island are basic but adequate; there are no permanent hotels or major commercial establishments, but open-air cottages, clean comfort rooms, and a security outpost are provided. Overnight stays are popular, often involving camping to experience the quiet and stargazing, though visitors must bring their own food and provisions as electricity is limited.
Nearby, boats and platforms provide equipment rental for snorkeling and diving, making visiting the island convenient and full of activities, including swimming, snorkeling, diving, and walking along the long, picture-perfect sandbar.
