“Founded in 1607, the oldest stone church in the Philippines Spanish colonial Baroque architecture Beautiful interior frescoes and ceiling paintings Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site Ideal for visitors interested in history, art, and architecture”
San Agustin Church is a historic stone church built during the Spanish colonial period. Located within the famous Intramuros (Walled City) of Manila, it holds the distinction of being the oldest stone church still standing in the Philippines (completed in 1607).
Its structure, built mainly of stone and mortar, showcases the Earthquake Baroque architectural style—a design specifically engineered to remain intact despite numerous storms and intense seismic activity. It is one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
Inside the church, visitors can admire spectacular frescoes and ceiling paintings. These were executed by Italian artists using the trompe-l'oeil technique, creating a stunning optical illusion of three-dimensional carvings and architectural depth, depicting religious stories and historical events.
The church also holds immense historical significance. It is the final resting place of Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi (founder of the City of Manila), and the site where the terms of the surrender of Manila to the Americans were signed in 1898.
The surrounding area includes the San Agustin Museum (formerly the Augustinian Monastery) which displays artifacts, including old Bibles, liturgical items, and sacred statues. The complex, including the church and a serene courtyard/cloister, allows visitors to enjoy a comprehensive cultural, historical, and educational experience.
