“Built by the Spanish in the 16th century as the colonial capital Once the center of governance and religion in Manila Home to landmarks like San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago Visitors can explore by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage Blends European architecture with Filipino heritage beautifully”

Intramuros, literally meaning “within the walls,” is the historic heart of Manila, founded in 1571 by Spanish conquistadors. It was designed as a fortified city surrounded by thick stone walls and moats to protect it from invasions, making it one of the most well-preserved colonial sites in the Philippines.

Inside the walls, visitors will find cobblestone streets, old churches, and heritage buildings that reflect the grandeur of Spanish architecture. Notable landmarks include the UNESCO-listed San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago, which holds deep historical significance from World War II.

During the colonial era, this place was considered the 'heart of Manila' in terms of both politics and religion. Most government buildings and large churches were located within the walls, making Intramuros the center of power and faith during that time.

Although heavily damaged during World War II, Intramuros has been meticulously restored by the Philippine government. Today, it stands as a living museum where visitors can immerse themselves in centuries of history, culture, and tradition.

Tourists can explore the city on foot, ride bicycles, or use a horse-drawn carriage, known as a 'Kalesa,' to experience the beauty of this ancient yet vibrant city. It also features museums, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints offering beautiful views of the Pasig River.
