“Bokor National Park is famous for its old, abandoned structures on the hilltop, such as the Bokor Hill Station and the Old Casino, alongside vast viewpoints overlooking the sea and Kampot town.”
Bokor National Park also known as Preah Monivong National Park is a tropical forest area located on a high mountain, offering an atmosphere distinct from other areas in Cambodia. The park is situated on a mountain range with a clear view of the Gulf of Thailand, and it features an excellent paved road leading up to the summit, making travel convenient. The main area of the park is the Bokor Plateau, which has a cooler climate than the plains below, making it a popular former resort destination.
What makes Bokor National Park uniquely charming are the old buildings of the Bokor Hill Station constructed by the French during the 1920s. These structures, including the Old Casino Hotel, the old Catholic Church, and the post office, were abandoned after the war, creating a lonely and mysterious ambiance. This is a fascinating spot for enthusiasts of old architecture and historical site exploration. Additionally, the park contains important religious sites such as Wat Sampov Pram and the Yeay Mao Monument, which is highly revered.
The main activities in the park include driving to explore and stop at various viewpoints along the route, and visiting Popokvil Waterfall. The rainy season (May – October) is when the waterfall is at its most beautiful and voluminous, while water levels may be lower during the dry season. The atmosphere on the mountaintop can change rapidly; sometimes, thick fog envelops the area, making the abandoned sites even more enigmatic.
