“The only site that maintains the original condition of the torture prison and displays a large collection of victims' photographs, deeply telling the story of the brutality of the Khmer Rouge genocide and ensuring it is never forgotten.”

The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is one of the most important historical sites in Cambodia and the world. In the past, this was a high school named Tuol Svay Prey, but when the Communist Party of Kampuchea (Khmer Rouge) seized power in 1975 (B.E. 2518), the school was converted into a highly secretive prison and interrogation center code-named Security Prison 21, or better known as S-21.

This place is a symbol of the brutality and torture of the Khmer Rouge regime. The school buildings were surrounded by barbed wire, classrooms were divided into small individual cells and interrogation rooms, all under strict security. It is estimated that over 15,000 to 20,000 people were detained and tortured here, most of whom ended up being killed at the Choeung Ek Killing Fields. Only a handful of people survived S-21, serving as vital witnesses to the crimes committed.

A visit to Tuol Sleng is an emotionally heavy experience. The museum preserves the condition of the cells and much of the torture equipment. Large photographs of almost all the victims, documented before their execution, are displayed, serving as powerful and deeply moving evidence. For those interested in political history, governance, and human tragedy, this site is indispensable for learning.

As a place connected with death and torture, the museum’s atmosphere is calm, quiet, and solemn throughout the year. Visitors should prepare themselves for information that may evoke strong emotions. An audio guide service is also available, providing in-depth information and narratives from survivors, which enhances the learning experience.

Tuol Sleng is not only a place for historians but also a site that encourages artists and creators to reflect on the dark side of human history, and it serves as a reminder for couples and the general public of the value of peace and coexistence. Seeing the remnants of terror inscribed on the walls reinforces the importance of respecting human rights.
