“Japan’s smallest castle with panoramic views of the “sandwich-style” castle town and the surrounding Shiroyama Park.”
Kitsuki Castle was originally built in 1394 on Shiroyama hill overlooking Morie Bay, and served as a natural fortress. Its strategic location influenced the development of Kitsuki as a “sandwich-style” castle town, with samurai streets flanking the central commercial avenue.
The current 3-story Tenshu tower is a 1970 reconstruction on the original foundation. Inside, a small museum displays samurai armor, swords, and historical artifacts related to the Hosokawa and Matsudaira clans.
From the observation deck, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the castle town and Morie Bay extending to the Seto Inland Sea.
The surrounding Shiroyama Park is popular for cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn.
