“A sacred and respectful location where visitors can learn about and commemorate a significant tragedy in Cambodian history through the display of a skull stupa within the temple grounds”

Wat Thmei is situated close to the heart of Siem Reap and plays a vital role in reminding visitors of the dark period in Cambodian history under the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975–1979. The area surrounding the temple was once used as one of the local Killing Fields, where numerous victims were executed and buried in mass graves.

The most significant element of the temple is the Memorial Stupa built to house the skulls and bones of the deceased victims found in the vicinity. These skulls are respectfully displayed inside the stupa, serving as tangible evidence of the tragedy’s brutality, ensuring that future generations acknowledge and never forget the events. The compound also houses a school and a monastery, symbolizing the return of life and spiritual renewal.

A visit to Wat Thmei is an experience that evokes feelings of quiet contemplation and solemnity. Visitors spend time viewing the stupa and the surrounding area respectfully. The visit typically involves little guidance or activity, but rather offers an opportunity for visitors to reflect and pay tribute to those who perished. The overall atmosphere is a blend of an active religious site and a historical memorial.

Use your visit to Wat Thmei as a moment to reflect on resilience and hope, with the aim that such a tragedy will never happen again.
