“The South Gate is the most impressive gateway into Angkor Thom, featuring a colossal stone structure adorned with four-faced towers of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and a causeway lined with sculptures of Devas and Asuras tugging at the Naga serpent.”

South Gate of Angkor Thom is considered the most beautiful and completely preserved main entrance among the five city gates of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. The massive structure of this archway stands majestic over the road that leads to the Bayon Temple at the city's heart, allowing visitors to feel the immediate grandeur of the ancient kingdom upon arrival.

The gate's special feature is the central tower featuring a colossal sculpture of the Bodhisattva's face turned to the four cardinal directions, a signature element of the Bayon style. The causeway leading to the city gate is decorated with stone balustrades on both sides, lined with sculptures: one side depicts the Devas (Gods) and the other side the Asuras (Demons), jointly pulling the Naga serpent to symbolize the sacred Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan), which represents the creation of the universe.

The atmosphere at the South Gate is vibrant and lively, being a very popular spot for tourists to take photos throughout the day, especially during the early morning and evening when the sunlight is softer, making the photographs of the Deva and Asura sculptures and the four-faced tower on the gate's top beautiful and dimensional. Passing through this gate marks the start of an adventure on the path of the great Khmer civilization.

This city gate is especially attractive to art historians, architectural photographers, and those seeking photos that convey the majesty and symbolism of Angkor Thom. Photographs of the Naga sculptures and the four-faced tower above the gate are unique and iconic symbols of a visit to Cambodia.
