South Gate of Angkor Thom is considered the most beautiful and completely preserved main entrance among the five city gates of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Khmer Empire, built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII. The massive structure of this archway stands majestic over the road that leads to the Bayon Temple at the city's heart, allowing visitors to feel the immediate grandeur of the ancient kingdom upon arrival.
