“Kbal Spean is a sacred river filled with thousands of Lingas and Hindu deity carvings beneath the water's surface, requiring visitors to hike uphill through lush jungle to discover these hidden artistic and religious secrets.”

Kbal Spean, which translates to Bridge Head, or known as the River of a Thousand Lingas, is a unique and ancient archaeological site located on the slopes of Phnom Kulen. These sandstone carvings were created during the Khmer Empire between the 11th and 13th centuries, dedicated to Shiva. The river water was believed to be purified by the numerous Lingas carved into the riverbed before flowing down to the plains and irrigating the rice fields of Angkor.

The most striking feature is the vast amount of carving done directly onto the riverbed rock, which is most visible during the dry season. Thousands of Lingas are carved in square and circular patterns. There are also carvings of significant Hindu deities, such as Vishnu reclining on the Naga, Brahma, and Shiva riding Nandi, reflecting the deep religious faith and focus on fertility during that era.

Accessing Kbal Spean requires a moderate effort. Visitors must hike along a marked trail through the jungle for about 1.5 - 2 kilometers uphill, which takes approximately 30-45 minutes. This trek leads through a shady, lush forest, giving a sense of adventure and discovery. The low water season is the best time to clearly view the rock sculptures.

Travel Tips
  • Best Visiting Season: It is best to visit during the dry season (December to April) as the river water recedes, allowing the carved Lingas to be seen most clearly.

  • Footwear and Equipment: Sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes are essential as the trail can be slippery and uneven. Bring water and insect repellent.

  • Photography: Since the trail is shaded by trees, be prepared for low-light conditions, and consider a waterproof camera if you wish to take pictures of the carvings in the water.

  • Preparation: The hike takes about 1-2 hours (round trip). Allocate your time carefully to ensure you are back down before closing time.
