“An ancient laterite and sandstone temple from the era of King Jayavarman VII, prominently encased within a modern vihara, clearly showcasing the coexistence of two architectural periods.”

Wat Nokor, officially known as Wat Nokor Bachey, is an ancient temple complex located just outside Kampong Cham city. It was originally built around the 11th century during the glorious period of the Khmer Empire under King Jayavarman VII. Initially a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Prajnaparamita, it was later converted into a Mahayana Buddhist site. The main construction material is characteristic laterite and black sandstone. The ancient structure is surrounded by a glass enclosure and a large stupa built in a later era, creating a striking image of ancient architecture situated within a modern Buddhist temple.

The ancient stone sanctuary, which serves as the complex's heart, is a small cluster of prasats (towers) that still retains intricate carvings, particularly on the door frames and windows, depicting religious narratives and mythological tales of the era. A significant feature is the large golden Buddha statue enshrined inside the ancient stone structure, highlighting the continuous religious adaptation and inheritance. Additionally, the outer area of the temple features vibrantly painted stupas illustrating the life of the Buddha and local folklore, creating an interesting contrast between modern art and the solemnity of the ancient temple.

A visit to Wat Nokor offers a serene and historically rich experience. Visitors can observe the contrast between different eras the wear and tear of the ancient temple, ravaged by time, and the vitality of the modern Buddhist structures that are well-maintained today. The temple grounds often host religious ceremonies and offerings by local residents, allowing visitors to feel the profound faith and friendly atmosphere.

This site is an excellent destination for historians, architecture enthusiasts, and pilgrims seeking to understand the evolution of religion in Cambodia. The juxtaposition of ancient laterite stones and modern white concrete structures offers unique and appealing elements for photography. Furthermore, Wat Nokor Bachey is located near other important tourist attractions such as Phnom Pros and Phnom Srei, which can be visited on the same day.
