“A complex of two temples, a pre-Angkor brick vihara and a modern Buddhist temple, situated on a hilltop, offering stunning panoramic views of the Mekong River. ”
Wat Hanchey is one of the most important and oldest sacred sites in Kampong Cham Province. It is located on Phnom Hanchey (Hanchey Mountain), a low hill approximately 20 kilometers north of the city center along the Mekong River. The temple's distinction lies in its two concurrent historical periods: an ancient stone and brick sanctuary dating back to the Pre-Angkorian era (believed to be from the 7th century, during the Chenla Kingdom period), and a beautiful modern Buddhist monastery.
The main historical highlight is the Hanchey Temple itself, a small ancient brick sanctuary built in the Sambor Prei Kuk style which is rare to find. The remaining brick structure attests to the former dominance of Hinduism in the area. The modern Buddhist temple built nearby features vibrant viharas (assembly halls) and chedis (stupas), housing a massive golden Buddha statue facing the Mekong River, creating a feeling of grandeur and serenity.
The spectacular scenery is what attracts most visitors to Wat Hanchey. From the top of the hill, visitors can clearly see the vast Mekong River winding through the surrounding rice fields and villages. Especially during sunrise and sunset, this location is considered one of the best viewpoints in the Kampong Cham region. The peaceful atmosphere is ideal for spiritual retreat and relaxation.
