“Home to one of the world's largest groups of rescued Sun Bears and a critical hub for the rehabilitation of endangered wildlife, including elephants, tigers, and Siamese crocodiles, before their potential release back into the wild.”

Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC), also known as Phnom Tamao Zoo, was established in 1995 and is considered Cambodia's largest zoo and conservation area. It covers over 6,000 acres of protected and regenerating forest, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Phnom Penh. The center is operated by the Cambodian Forestry Administration with continuous support from international wildlife NGOs like Wildlife Alliance and Free the Bears. PTWRC provides shelter and rehabilitation for more than 1,200 animals from 102 species.

Almost all the animals residing here have been rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss, or injury due to human-wildlife conflict. PTWRC plays a critical role in the conservation of endangered species such as Asian elephants, tigers, Siamese crocodiles, and black-cheeked gibbons. It is also home to the world's largest Bear Sanctuary for Malayan Sun Bears, managed by Free the Bears, covering over 10 hectares and housing more than 130 bears. The center focuses on conservation and rehabilitation rather than commercial exhibition.

The visitor experience at PTWRC is unlike that of a typical zoo. Guests can drive their own vehicles or walk between the various exhibits within the expansive grounds. Visitors get to see wildlife in spacious enclosures that mimic their natural habitats and can opt for a special "Behind-the-Scenes Tour" managed by Wildlife Alliance for unique experiences like feeding elephants or visiting the nursery. The atmosphere of the center feels like a safari park, surrounded by well-maintained flora and fauna.

How to Get There
  • Taxi/Private Car Rental: This is the most convenient method. Take National Road 2 heading south from Phnom Penh for approximately 40 kilometers. The journey takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

  • Tuk-Tuk: A more economical option from Phnom Penh, but the journey may take up to 2 hours each way and can be less comfortable due to the distance.

  • Organized Tours with Transfer: Organizations like Wildlife Alliance and Free the Bears offer full-day tours with transportation from Phnom Penh, which include admission and special activities.

Travel Tips
  • Internal Travel: Due to the massive 6,000-acre area, private vehicles are permitted to enter and drive between the different animal sections (or you can rent a golf cart inside).

  • Food: Local restaurants and snack vendors are available within and around the center.

  • Variable Fees: Note that the basic admission fee and the special tours (like the Behind-the-Scenes Tour) have very different price points. Choose the package that suits your budget and interests.

  • Donations: Donating to the organizations working there, such as Free the Bears or Wildlife Alliance, is a great way to support the center's mission.

Admission Fee:

  • Local Cambodian Visitors: Adults $1 USD, Children $0.50 USD
  • Foreign visitors (approximate price): adult $5 USD, child $2–2.5 USD
  • Special Tours (e.g., by Wildlife Alliance): Can be priced around $120–$150 USD per person (includes special activities, food, and round-trip transport).

Opening Hours:

  • Open Daily day from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM.
