“Known as the Miniature Angkor Wat due to its striking architectural similarity with five prasats (towers) arranged in a quincunx pattern, built in the 11th century, and serving as one of the best viewpoints of the Sangker River and the lush rice fields.”

Phnom Banan Temple was constructed between the 11th century and the early 13th century, with several kings involved, particularly during the reigns of King Udayadityavarman II and King Jayavarman VII. The temple is situated on a hill approximately 80 meters high in the Banan District, south of Battambang city. The main structure consists of five towers built of laterite and sandstone, arranged in a quincunx pattern, which is considered a scaled-down version of the Angkor Wat architectural style.

A key feature of Phnom Banan is the challenging access via an ancient stone staircase climbing over 350 steps to the summit, flanked by sculptures of Nāgas and lions. Each step is steep and symbolizes a historical pilgrimage route. Although the temple is in ruins, there are still beautifully preserved lintels and sandstone carvings exhibiting the Baphuon and Angkorian styles, reflecting its enduring historical and religious significance.

The visitor experience begins with conquering the steps to the hilltop, a task all visitors must complete. The ascent rewards visitors with a spectacular vast panoramic view of the Battambang countryside, tracing the winding Sangker River, and taking in the endless green rice fields. The atmosphere at the top is tranquil and peaceful, perfect for relaxation and escaping the city buzz. You should plan your visit to watch the sunrise or sunset from the top for the most impressive views.

How to Get There
  • Tuk-Tuk: The most popular method. Tourists can hire a Tuk-Tuk from Battambang city for a full-day countryside tour, which usually includes Phnom Banan, Phnom Sampeau, and possibly the Bamboo Train.

  • Rented Car/Motorbike: You can rent a car or motorbike from the city and drive yourself along National Road 57

Travel Tips
  • Best Time to Visit: It is recommended to arrive early in the morning (before 08:00 AM) or late in the afternoon (after 03:30 PM) to avoid the extreme midday heat while climbing the stairs.

  • The Climb: The steps are steep and ancient. You should wear comfortable, closed-toe, non-slip shoes and carry drinking water with you.

  • Dress Code: As it is a sacred site and an active pagoda, please dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and knees.
