“Witness an active volcanic crater, expansive caldera scenery, rolling grasslands, and the legendary “Reclining Buddha” mountain silhouette from Daikanbo Lookout.”

Mount Aso (Volcano Aso) lies at the heart of Kyushu in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is one of the largest caldera systems in the world. The caldera contains five main peaks, among which Nakadake Crater remains actively volcanic, releasing steam and volcanic gases on a regular basis. When gas levels are safe, visitors are allowed to approach the crater rim and observe the volcanic activity directly—an experience possible in only a few places worldwide.

Surrounding the central peaks are several iconic scenic areas. Kusasenrigahama is a vast volcanic grassland where horses graze freely beside twin crater ponds, offering wide-open views of the volcanic landscape. Nearby, Komezuka is a perfectly symmetrical volcanic cone covered in grass, visible from the Aso Panorama Line (climbing is not permitted).

One of the most famous viewpoints is Daikanbo Lookout, located on the northern rim of the caldera. From here, visitors can see the mountain range forming a silhouette known as the “Reclining Buddha.” During autumn and winter mornings, the area is often covered in a dramatic “Sea of Clouds,” making the peaks appear as if they are floating above the mist. This natural phenomenon reflects spiritual imagery commonly found in Buddhist-influenced cultures across Asia.

When access to Nakadake Crater is restricted due to high gas levels or volcanic alert conditions, visitors can still enjoy the scenery through helicopter sightseeing tours operating near Aso Sanjo Terminal and the Cuddly Domon area. These flights provide a unique aerial perspective and are the only way to view the crater directly during closure periods.

How to Get There
  • From Aso Station, take a bus or taxi to Aso Sanjo Terminal

  • From Aso Sanjo Terminal, transfer to the Mt. Aso Loop Shuttle to reach Nakadake Crater

  • Visitors driving can use the Aso Panorama Line, which connects major viewpoints

  • From Kumamoto City or Beppu, travelers may take the sightseeing train JR Aso Boy!, featuring panoramic cars and a playful design

    • Note: JR Aso Boy! does not operate daily and advance seat reservations are required

Travel Tips
  • Check volcanic conditions daily; crater access is prohibited when the alert level is 2 or higher

  • Visitors with heart conditions, asthma, or respiratory illnesses should not approach the crater due to sulfur dioxide gas

  • If the crater is closed, consider a helicopter tour for aerial views

  • Do not miss local specialties from Aso City, especially Aka-ushi beef rice bowls (Aka-ushi Don) and fresh dairy products such as milk and soft-serve ice cream

  • Winter conditions can be cold and windy; warm clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended

Admission Fee:
