“A lively seaside seafood market renowned for sushi, fugu specialties, scenic Kanmon Strait views, and unique cross-island experiences.”
Karato Fish Market is located in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, an area widely known as “the Kitchen of the Kanmon Region” and the undisputed fugu (pufferfish) capital of Japan. Positioned along the Kanmon Strait, the market sits at a strategic maritime point linking Kyushu and Honshu, making it both a culinary and geographic landmark.
The market’s most famous attraction is Iki-iki Bakangai, commonly known as the “Sushi Battle.” Held every Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday, wholesale vendors temporarily transform into sushi stalls, allowing visitors to select freshly made sushi piece by piece. Prices typically range from 100 to 400 yen per piece, including premium toppings such as fugu and fatty tuna at remarkably reasonable prices.
Must-try specialties include fugu sashimi, delicately sliced into flower-like patterns, comforting fugu soup (Fugu Jiru), and fresh uni (sea urchin) sourced from nearby waters. After purchasing food, visitors often enjoy a casual picnic along the seaside boardwalk in front of the market, where large cargo ships pass through the Kanmon Strait beneath the iconic Kanmon Bridge.
For rainy days or extreme weather, the second floor of the market provides a free indoor seating area with shared tables and chairs, allowing visitors to enjoy food purchased downstairs comfortably. Seating is limited and fills quickly during peak hours.
Another unique experience nearby is walking through the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel, an underwater passage connecting Yamaguchi and Fukuoka prefectures. Visitors who complete the walk can collect stamps from both sides and receive a “Kanmon Strait Crossing Certificate” as a souvenir from the tourist offices at Karato Market or Mojiko Station.
