“Discover Japan’s largest polar bear exhibit with the stunning “Hokkaido Blue” underwater tunnel, and meet the beloved family of Asian elephants.”
Maruyama Zoo, established in 1951, is the oldest zoo in Hokkaido and is located within Maruyama Park, near Hokkaido Shrine. Surrounded by forested hills, the zoo offers a calm and nature-focused atmosphere, making it an enjoyable destination for visitors of all ages.
The zoo’s signature attraction is the Polar Bear Pavilion, the largest polar bear facility in Japan. Its 18-meter-long underwater tunnel, known as “Hokkaido Blue,” allows visitors to watch polar bears and seals swimming gracefully overhead, creating one of the most photogenic spots in Sapporo.
Another major highlight is the Elephant House, opened in 2019. This modern facility is designed for herd-based living and features an indoor swimming pool. It is home to a family of Asian elephants, including a young elephant born at the zoo, which has become a beloved symbol and soft power icon of Sapporo.
The zoo also features the Hokkaido Native Species Zone, where visitors can learn about local wildlife such as the Ezo brown bear and the Ezo wolf, displayed in environments that recreate Hokkaido’s natural forests.
