Naritasan Kawagoe Betsuin, established in 1853, is the first official branch (Betsuin) of Naritasan Shinshoji in Chiba Prefecture. The temple was built to spread the spiritual power of Fudō Myōō, the “Immovable Wisdom King,” to Kawagoe—an important merchant city during the Edo period.

Fudō Myōō is depicted with a fierce expression symbolizing the destruction of ignorance. He holds a sword to cut through delusion and a rope to guide beings toward salvation, representing strength, protection, and unwavering faith.

Architecture & Important Structures

• Temple Gate
  The symbolic entrance to the sacred grounds, often guarded by protective statues that ward off evil spirits.
• Main Hall (Hondō)
  The central worship hall enshrining Fudō Myōō. This is where the powerful Goma Fire Ritual is performed, creating an intense and spiritual atmosphere.
• Daishidō Hall
  Dedicated to Kōbō Daishi (Kūkai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism in the 9th century. A bronze statue of him in pilgrim attire stands within the temple grounds, honoring his profound influence on Japanese esoteric Buddhism.
• Bell Tower (Shōrō)
  A traditional wooden bell tower. The bell is rung on special religious occasions and is believed to purify the mind and mark sacred time.
• Fudō Myōō Triad
  An outdoor stone statue group featuring Fudō Myōō and his two attendants, Kongara Dōji and Seitaka Dōji, symbolizing guidance and protection.

• Goma Fire Ritual
  A sacred fire ceremony where wooden prayer sticks are burned to cleanse negativity and grant wishes. It is one of the temple’s most powerful and memorable experiences.

• Antique Market (28th of Every Month)
  On the 28th of each month, the temple grounds transform into a lively antique market featuring vintage goods, collectibles, and traditional items, blending spirituality with nostalgic charm.
• Despite being close to Kawagoe’s bustling Little Edo district, the temple remains peaceful and serene—ideal for reflection and quiet exploration.
