“A century-old wooden heritage house with the atmosphere of ancient China and traditional architecture of Ranong.”

Baan Tian Sue (Hundred-Year-Old House) is a historic residence of a Hokkien Chinese family that played an important role in the history of Ranong. It was built in the late reign of King Rama V, during a period when Ranong was flourishing due to tin mining and maritime trade. The name “Tian Sue” comes from the Hokkien Chinese word 天赐, meaning “a gift from heaven” or “a blessing bestowed by the sky,” reflecting the family’s belief that their success came from divine blessing and ancestral protection. The house was built by Khun Tian Sue, who was connected through family ties to influential groups involved in Ranong’s early administration and economy, especially Chinese merchant networks engaged in mining and trade across the Malay Peninsula.

The building is a two-story structure in the Sino–Portuguese style, blending Chinese and Western architectural elements. Its distinctive features include colonial-style arched doorways, wooden casement windows, and traditional Chinese clay tile roofing.Inside the house, there is a central courtyard (Sky Well) designed according to Chinese Feng Shui principles, allowing light, wind, and rain to enter the home to maintain balance and natural ventilation, following traditional Chinese architectural wisdom. The spatial layout reflects traditional Chinese family structure, with important rooms and the ancestral hall located at the center, while the front areas were used for welcoming guests and social activities.

In the past, the ground floor was used for trading and business dealings, while the upper floor served as the family’s living quarters and private space, reflecting the lifestyle of a wealthy Chinese merchant family of that era.Today, the house has been preserved by descendants and opened as a living museum, allowing visitors to experience the original atmosphere of the historic home and learn about Ranong’s history.

The interior displays antique household items, historical photographs, and original furniture, along with storytelling provided by the family owners themselves.Baan Tian Sue is therefore not just a tourist attraction, but a cultural learning site that truly reflects the history, economy, and Hokkien Chinese heritage of Ranong.
