“An ancient temple surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of Ranong, enshrining the incorrupt body of ‘Luang Pho Duan,’ a renowned Vipassana meditation master”

Wat Waree Banphot (Wat Bang Non) is one of the most important temples in Ranong Province, valued for its religious significance, historical background, and artistic heritage. The temple is situated on a hillside in Bang Non Subdistrict, an area that was once connected to historical trade routes between Thailand and Myanmar. As a result, the temple’s architecture and decorative art beautifully combine Burmese influences with Southern Thai artistic styles. The atmosphere within the temple is peaceful, shady, and surrounded by natural mountain scenery. From the upper areas of the temple grounds, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of forests, hills, and Ranong town. During early mornings after rainfall or in the evening, light mist and cool air often create a refreshing atmosphere, reflecting Ranong’s reputation as one of Thailand’s rainiest provinces.

One of the temple’s most sacred landmarks is the giant reclining Buddha known as “Phra Phuttha Saiyat Phuttha Chai Mongkhon.” This magnificent golden reclining Buddha measures approximately 22 meters in length and is regarded as the largest reclining Buddha in Southern Thailand. Its gentle facial expression reflects a blend of Thai and Burmese artistic traditions, symbolizing serenity and the Buddha’s entry into Nirvana. The importance of this reclining Buddha goes beyond its impressive size. King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously bestowed the official name “Phra Phuttha Saiyat Phuttha Chai Mongkhon,” making it deeply revered among the people of Ranong. Many locals and visitors come to pay respects and seek blessings for prosperity, especially during Buddhist holy days and traditional Thai festivals.

Another remarkable landmark is the “Maha Chedi Si Ranong,” a golden Burmese-style pagoda representing the cultural identity of the Andaman border region. The pagoda features intricate details inspired by pagodas in Myeik, Myanmar, with a golden umbrella finial crowning its top. Inside are sacred Buddha relics and revered Buddha images. The surrounding area also serves as one of the temple’s best viewpoints, offering breathtaking scenery of mountain ranges and the Bang Non community below. What truly made Wat Bang Non widely known throughout Southern Thailand is the story of “Luang Pho Duan Thamvaro,” the temple’s former abbot and a highly respected meditation master. He played a major role in developing and restoring the temple grounds, transforming the hillside into an important spiritual center for local residents. Luang Pho Duan was admired for his strict adherence to Buddhist teachings, compassion, and dedication to helping the community.

After Luang Pho Duan passed away, a remarkable event occurred during his royal cremation ceremony. According to local belief, the fire was unable to completely burn his body and robes. Many devotees regarded this as a miracle and a sign of his spiritual purity and merit. Today, his preserved body is enshrined in a glass coffin where worshippers continue to pay their respects and pray for health, safety, and success in life. The temple also includes meditation halls, hillside pavilions, and ceremonial spaces used for important Buddhist activities. Throughout the year, the temple hosts chanting ceremonies, candlelight processions, meditation retreats, and New Year prayer events, making it not only a tourist attraction but also an important spiritual center for the people of Ranong. Thanks to its hilltop location, Wat Waree Banphot is also considered one of the best sunset viewpoints in Ranong. In the late afternoon, golden sunlight reflects beautifully on the reclining Buddha and the pagoda, creating a peaceful and unforgettable atmosphere that is perfect for worship, photography, and relaxation amidst the tranquil nature of Southern Thailand’s Andaman coast.
