Sydney Observatory was built in 1858 on Observatory Hill, one of the significant high points in the historic district near The Rocks and Sydney Harbour. This area is listed as a cultural heritage site of New South Wales and was historically associated with Fort Phillip, serving as a signal station and strategic viewpoint overlooking Sydney Harbour before transforming into a center for science, astronomy, and timekeeping for the city.

The astronomical history of this area is also linked to Australia's early colonial era, as William Dawes, an English astronomer and officer, established an astronomical observation point nearby at Dawes Point. This makes Sydney Observatory one of the continuous successors in the roles of sky exploration, navigation, and time calculation in Sydney.

The building stands out with its golden Sydney sandstone, copper dome roofs, and a classic atmosphere that blends architectural beauty with scientific history. A symbolic highlight is the Time Ball on top of the building, which served as a time signal for ships in Sydney Harbour to accurately set their chronometers in the era before modern communication systems.

Inside, there are exhibition areas showcasing astronomical stories, old scientific instruments, star charts, and telescopes that reflect the observatory's role in navigation, sky exploration, and establishing the city's standard time. Visitors can join tours to see the building, astronomical domes, and learn closely about the observatory's history.

Beyond its historical value, the area around Observatory Hill is also a very beautiful viewpoint in Sydney, offering panoramic views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay, and Sydney Harbour. It's especially ideal in the evening and at night when the city lights reflect on the water, perfect for photography, strolling, and relaxing in a tranquil atmosphere near the city center.

• Train: Alight at Circular Quay or Wynyard Station, then walk for approximately 10–15 minutes through The Rocks district and up Observatory Hill.
• On foot: From Argyle Street, walk through the sandstone tunnel, then continue to Watson Road to reach the observatory area.
• Car or Taxi: You can reach the Upper Fort Street or Watson Road area, but parking in this vicinity is limited.

• It is advisable to check opening days and tour schedules in advance, as timetables may change due to activities and building conservation work.
• It is recommended to arrive before 1:00 PM if you wish to see the Time Ball.
• Night tours and stargazing activities should be booked in advance.
• Evenings are an excellent time for photographing the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour.
