The Ancient Wooden Ho Tham

The Ho Tham, or ancient manuscript library, is a structure built to preserve palm-leaf manuscripts and Buddhist scriptures. The most notable examples in Phrae are located at Wat Phra Bat Ming Muang and Wat Luang. These are small, elevated teak wood buildings designed to protect the manuscripts from termites and moisture. Their architectural significance lies in the intricate wood carvings on the gables and eaves, as well as the ancient timber-framing techniques that join the wood without the use of nails. This reflects Lanna craftsmanship in creating durable yet aesthetically pleasing structures adapted to Northern Thailand's climate.
