“Be amazed by Thailand’s only concrete arch dam with its grand scale, enjoy one of the most beautiful sunset viewpoints over the reservoir, and experience the starting point of scenic rafting routes toward Doi Tao.”
Bhumibol Dam, originally known by locals as Yanhee Dam, began with a vision to provide Thailand with a stable and sustainable source of electrical energy. Construction commenced in 1953, a period during which the project was considered a monumental challenge due to the dense forest terrain and the necessity of transporting heavy machinery through the wilderness. Thousands of workers were employed to excavate rock and pour massive amounts of concrete. Later, in 1957, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX) bestowed the name Bhumibol Dam upon the site, officially presiding over its opening in 1964, marking a new era for Thailand’s energy sector.
World-Class Architecture:
- In terms of engineering, Bhumibol Dam is a Single Arch Concrete Dam standing 154 meters high (equivalent to a 50-story building) and stretching over 486 meters in length. The dam's curvature is not merely for aesthetics; it is designed to distribute water pressure toward the limestone canyon walls on either side. This allows the structure to support an immense volume of water while utilizing significantly less concrete than a traditional gravity dam.
Benefits of Bhumibol Dam:
-
Electricity Generation: It serves as a major hydroelectric power plant that has supplied electricity to households and industries for decades.
-
Agriculture and Irrigation: The water stored in the massive reservoir—so vast it resembles a lake nestled in the mountains—is released to nourish over 10 million rai of farmland in the Ping and Chao Phraya river basins, ensuring water is available year-round, even during the dry season.
-
Flood Prevention: The dam helps slow down water runoff from the north, preventing it from overwhelming the central plains during the monsoon season, which has reduced flood damage countless times.
Must-See Attractions:
-
The Concrete Arch Crest: This is the most beautiful viewpoint. Visitors can walk along the crest to enjoy a 360-degree panorama. On one side lies the vast turquoise water surrounded by high mountains; on the other, the Ping River winds through local communities below.
-
Ruam Ruthai Garden: Located at the base of the dam, this exquisitely landscaped garden features a variety of vibrant flowers and neatly trimmed ornamental plants. Shaded by large trees, it is perfect for relaxing, photography, or enjoying a picnic in the cool breeze.
-
Water Management & Power Plant Buildings: For those seeking knowledge, the exhibition buildings display the inner workings of the dam and hydroelectric plant, illustrating how falling water is transformed into electricity for the nation.
-
Phra Phuttha Sirikitti Teepangkorn: A large, majestic Buddha image in the blessing posture. Tourists often visit to pay their respects for good fortune while enjoying the high-angle views.
Highlight Activities:
The most popular activity is rafting across the Bhumibol Dam reservoir. Tourists often cruise to pay homage at Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi, an ancient temple isolated in the middle of the water. Alternatively, adventurers can choose long-distance overnight rafting trips to Doi Tao District, Chiang Mai, to experience the absolute tranquility of the water, mountains, and islets.
How to Get There
By Private Car:
- From Tak city, take Highway No. 1 (Phahonyothin Road) toward Lampang. At kilometer marker 463 (Sam Ngao junction), turn left onto Highways No. 1107 and 1357. Continue for approximately 17 kilometers. The road is fully paved and accessible for all vehicle types.
