“A natural border river flowing from south to north, home to Rim Moei Market for cross-border shopping and the Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge that connects trade between the two countries, along with the iconic landmark known as the “Westernmost Point at Rim Moei.””
The Moei River originates in Phop Phra District, Tak Province. Its most distinctive geographical feature is its northward flow, passing through Mae Sot, Mae Ramat, and Tha Song Yang districts before joining the Salween River in Mae Hong Son Province.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Moei River is its reverse flow direction, which contrasts with most rivers in Thailand that typically flow from north to south. This unique feature makes the river well known from a geographical perspective.
The area at the foot of the Thai–Myanmar Friendship Bridge serves as a major border trade hub and is home to Rim Moei Market. The market offers a variety of local products from both Thailand and Myanmar, such as dried bamboo shoots, leather goods, gemstones from Myanmar, and affordable general merchandise.
The Moei River also acts as a long-standing natural boundary and transportation route, closely linking the livelihoods, trade, and cultural exchange of communities on both sides of the Thai–Myanmar border.
