“A magnificent 53.6-meter-tall square stupa enshrining the Buddha’s chest bone relic with a golden spire weighing 110 kilograms atop the pagoda.”

Wat Phra That Phanom is a royal monastery located on the banks of the Mekong River in That Phanom District, Nakhon Phanom Province. It is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Northeast Thailand and a cultural landmark shared with neighboring Laos.

The pagoda is believed to have been constructed over 2,300 years ago by Phra Mahakassapa and 500 arahants, who enshrined the Lord Buddha’s chest bone relic (Phra Urangatha) within its structure. The construction was supported by several local rulers from surrounding cities, symbolizing unity and devotion across the region.

In 1942, the monastery was elevated to the status of a first-class royal monastery. In August 1975, after days of heavy rain and storms, the entire pagoda collapsed. Thanks to widespread public donations and government support, it was rebuilt faithfully following the original design and completed in 1979.

The current structure stands 53.6 meters tall with a base measuring 12.33 meters on each side. Its golden spire weighs approximately 110 kilograms. Inside, it enshrines thousands of valuable offerings from devoted Buddhists.

Wat Phra That Phanom plays a vital role in royal ceremonies and religious festivals, especially during the annual That Phanom Fair held on the full moon of the third lunar month, which attracts pilgrims and visitors from all over Thailand and Laos.

Architecturally, the pagoda is a square brick stupa with intricately carved patterns and three-tiered archways leading up to the main spire, reflecting influences from ancient Lao and Khmer styles. King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) once noted that the pagoda might have been built following either Mahayana or Theravada Buddhist traditions.

This sacred site is ideal for travelers interested in Buddhist culture, history, and architecture, as well as photographers and visitors seeking a peaceful spiritual atmosphere along the Mekong River.

If you want to experience one of Northeast Thailand’s most important spiritual and cultural landmarks, Wat Phra That Phanom is a must-visit destination.
