“A serene crescent-shaped beach featuring the iconic "Hollow Rock" natural formations. It offers stunning sunset views, lush mangroves, and crystal-clear waters perfect for peaceful relaxation.”
Buffalo Horn Bay, located on the western side of Koh Phayam, Ranong Province, is one of the most distinctive beaches on the island. Its long, curving coastline, approximately 2 kilometers long, encircles the bay in a shape resembling a buffalo's horns, hence its name. The bay is divided into several sections: North Buffalo Horn Bay, Central Buffalo Horn Bay, and South Buffalo Horn Bay, each with slightly different topography and atmosphere, including water depth, beach characteristics, and suitability for activities.
The beach has a unique characteristic: the sand is fine-grained and varies in color tone depending on the area. Some areas have creamy white sand, while others have pinkish or yellowish-gray hues from shell fragments and other natural elements. During low tide, beautiful striated patterns are visible on the sand. The gently sloping beach makes many areas safe for swimming, especially in the northern part of the bay where the water is calm and clear, ideal for swimming and relaxing by the sea.
During low tide, the beach expands significantly, allowing tourists to walk along the shore and explore the rock formations at the end of the bay. In particular, the northern area features small rocks and hills eroded by the sea, creating holes or caves, known as pierced rocks, which are a significant highlight of the bay. The unique rock formation, with its large cavity that allows one to walk through it, is the result of long-term wave erosion, creating a striking shape and making it a popular spot for tourists to take photos.
The overall atmosphere of Khao Kwai Bay is tranquil and natural compared to Ao Yai (the larger bay), which is more crowded. Around the bay, there are bungalows, small resorts, and restaurants scattered along the beach and coconut groves, maintaining a simple island lifestyle. The absence of large buildings or crowds makes it ideal for tourists seeking true relaxation and an untouched connection with nature.
Facing west, the bay is one of the most beautiful places to watch the sunset on Koh Phayam. In the evening, the sunlight reflects off the sea and the beach, creating a peaceful and romantic ambiance. Furthermore, parts of the bay retain mangrove forests and a rich coastal ecosystem, providing a habitat for marine life and other natural elements. This ensures that Khao Kwai Bay strikes a good balance between natural beauty and environmental conservation.
