“The longest crescent bay on Koh Phayam with fine sand, offering a peaceful atmosphere perfect for surfing, exploring sand patterns, and watching the best sunset.”
Ao Yai on Koh Phayam is considered the main beach and one of the most important coastal areas on the island. Its long, curving coastline facing the Andaman Sea provides a wide open space and a tranquil atmosphere, a stark contrast to densely populated tourist areas. Ao Yai boasts kilometers of coastline, with the beach changing with the tides. During low tide, a vast expanse of sand is visible, allowing for walks or drives along the shore in some sections. The sand is fine-grained and relatively soft, with soft tones ranging from golden to light gray, depending on the sunlight and natural environment.
The area surrounding Ao Yai retains a high degree of natural beauty compared to other provincial beaches. A few small accommodations, such as bungalows, resorts, and guesthouses, are scattered sparsely, contributing to a peaceful and private atmosphere. Most tourists choose to stay overnight to experience the slower pace of island life and spend most of their time relaxing on the beach, strolling along the shore, or watching the sunset – a major highlight of Ao Yai. Facing west, the view of the sun slowly disappearing over the Andaman Sea is exceptionally clear on clear days.
In terms of activities, Ao Yai is a promising spot for surfing in Ranong province, especially during the monsoon season, approximately from May to October. The waves here can be stronger and more suitable for beginner to intermediate surfers. However, wave patterns vary daily depending on the weather, making it ideal for natural surfing rather than controlled surf courses. Additionally, the beach area features small restaurants and bars offering a simple and friendly atmosphere rather than luxury.
Overall, Ao Yai reflects Koh Phayam's identity as a pristine, tranquil, and unspoiled nature-focused island, perfect for travelers seeking escape from the hustle and bustle of big cities and a genuine connection with the sea, sky, and nature.
