“A dramatic caldera lake offering iconic Mount Fuji views, floating torii scenery, legendary pirate ships, and access to Hakone’s most important cultural and natural attractions.”

Lake Ashi was formed approximately 3,000 years ago following a major eruption of Mount Hakone, commonly known as Ashinoko - a classic caldera lake. Its steep surrounding mountains and lack of major natural river outlets reflect its volcanic origins, creating a uniquely enclosed and tranquil landscape at the center of Hakone National Park.

One of the lake’s most important spiritual landmarks is the Heiwa no Torii (Torii of Peace) of Hakone Shrine, standing directly in the water near Moto-Hakone. Erected in 1952 to commemorate the post-war peace treaty, the gate symbolizes purification through water for those approaching the shrine and has become one of Japan’s most iconic photographic scenes.

Lake Ashi is also famous for its Pirate Ship Cruises, uniquely styled after 18th-century European warships inspired by vessels such as the Vasa. These ships operate both as sightseeing cruises and practical transportation, connecting Togendai, Moto-Hakone, and Hakone-machi, while offering classic Mount Fuji views on clear days.

On exceptionally calm mornings, visitors may witness the rare “Double Fuji” phenomenon (Sasa-Fuji)—a perfect mirror reflection of Mount Fuji on the lake’s surface. Along the southern shore, travelers can explore the Hakone Kyu-Kaido (Old Tokaido Road), including the atmospheric Cedar Avenue, where 400-year-old trees planted by the Tokugawa Shogunate once shaded samurai and merchants traveling between Kyoto and Edo.

Beyond the main shrine, the lesser-known Kuzuryu Shrine (Nine-Headed Dragon Shrine) sits quietly along the lakeside. According to legend, a fearsome dragon once inhabited the lake before being pacified here; today, the shrine is especially popular among visitors praying for good fortune and success in relationships.
