“Tokyo’s most iconic temple where ancient spirituality meets bustling shopping streets and festivals.”

Senso-ji Temple also known as Asakusa Temple stands as Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple, founded in 645 AD and dedicated to Kannon Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy. The temple’s name, Senso-ji (浅草寺), is its official title, while “Asakusa Temple” is the more familiar name derived from its district—making it one of Japan’s best-known religious landmarks.

According to legend, in 628 AD two fishermen discovered a small golden statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. Despite returning it to the water several times, it mysteriously reappeared, prompting the local chief to build a temple to enshrine it.

Visitors first enter through the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate), distinguished by its giant red lantern standing over 5.5 meters tall, painted with thunder and cloud motifs—Tokyo’s most photographed symbol of old Japan. Beyond this gate lies Nakamise-dori, a lively shopping street lined with over a hundred small stalls selling traditional crafts, age-manju sweets, and souvenirs reflecting centuries of Edo culture.

At the end of Nakamise-dori stands the Hozomon Gate (Treasure-House Gate)—the imposing inner gate marking the entrance to the temple grounds. It displays two enormous straw sandals (waraji), symbolizing protection against evil spirits and welcoming all who enter the sacred precinct.

Inside the compound, the Main Hall (Hondo) enshrines the revered statue of Kannon, while the Five-Story Pagoda adds architectural grace to the skyline. Near the main hall sits the Jokoro (Incense Burner)—a large bronze vessel where visitors waft sacred incense smoke over parts of their body to purify and bless them, especially for health and well-being.

Much of the temple complex was destroyed during World War II and later reconstructed in the mid-20th century, with remarkable faithfulness to the original designs. This restoration symbolizes Tokyo’s resilience and reverence for cultural heritage, preserving Senso-ji as a timeless testament to the city’s enduring spirit.
