“Visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Chumphon city, the Gulf of Thailand, and Pak Nam Chumphon. The viewpoint is especially popular for its stunning sunrise and sunset scenes. At the summit stands the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Guan Yin) in the “Maharajlila” posture, revered by local fishermen and seafarers for protection and blessings.”

Khao Matree Viewpoint is one of the most beautiful and iconic attractions in Chumphon Province. Located atop Khao Matree hill—which is not very high but perfectly positioned—it offers sweeping panoramic views in every direction. From here, visitors can take in the serene scenery of Chumphon city, the tranquil fishing village at Pak Nam Chumphon, the long curving coastline of Hat Pharadonphap and Hat Pak Hat, and the shimmering blue waters of the Gulf of Thailand dotted with small islands.

This viewpoint is particularly famous for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views. On one side, visitors can watch the sun rise from the horizon over the sea, while on the other, they can witness it setting behind the mountain range—making it a perfect spot for photography and relaxation in a peaceful natural setting.

At the summit stands a large statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Guan Yin) in the Maharajlila posture, facing the sea. The statue is highly revered by local fishermen, who believe that Guan Yin watches over and protects them during their journeys at sea. Around the viewpoint, there are shaded pavilions, feeding areas for the monkeys that live naturally on the hill, and a small café with a terrace for visitors to rest and enjoy the view.

Khao Matree Viewpoint also provides convenient facilities, including parking areas, restrooms, small restaurants, and several cafés. Visitors can relax with a cup of coffee while admiring the beautiful coastal scenery, making it a perfect spot for both early morning and late afternoon visits.

How to Get There
  • Private car: Follow the main route towards Pak Nam Chumphon or Hat Pharadonphap (Highway No. 4119 or 4098). Near Hat Pharadonphap Beach, you will see a sign leading to Khao Matree Viewpoint. The road uphill is concrete but quite steep, so caution is advised while driving.
  • Public transport: Taxis or motorcycle taxis from Chumphon city center can take visitors directly to the viewpoint. It’s recommended to agree on the fare beforehand since the route involves a steep climb.

Travel Tips
  • The best times to visit are early morning for the sunrise or late afternoon for the sunset, when the sky and landscape are at their most beautiful.

  • Because of the steep road, drivers should check their vehicles and use a low gear.

  • Parking spaces at the top are limited; during peak holidays, visitors may need to park below and walk up a short distance.

Entrance Fee

  • There is no entrance fee to visit Khao Matree Viewpoint. Visitors only need to pay for food or beverages at the cafés within the area if they choose to dine there.

Opening Hours

  • Khao Matree Viewpoint is open daily, generally from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (Café and shop opening hours may vary.)
