“ An emerald-green lake formed from an old mine, surrounded by mountains and rocky cliffs. Morning mist adds a unique scenic beauty, perfect for photography and relaxation. ”
Ranong Canyon originated from tin mining activities in the past, specifically hydraulic mining, which used high-pressure water to erode soil and extract minerals. This process created a large and deep basin. After mining operations ceased, the area was abandoned and gradually restored by nature.
The former mining pit eventually became a large reservoir, filled with rainwater and groundwater, forming a permanent water source. The water appears clear with an emerald-green color due to its depth, light reflection, and the mineral composition of the surrounding soil and rocks.
The surrounding landscape features rocky cliffs and hills shaped by both mining activity and natural erosion. Distinct layers and textures can be seen on the rock surfaces, giving the area a unique geological character. This terrain makes Ranong Canyon resemble a small-scale canyon.
Ecologically, the area has developed into a freshwater habitat, especially for fish, many of which have multiplied naturally or been introduced. This has led to fish feeding becoming a popular activity among visitors.
Today, the site has been developed into a relaxing tourist destination with walking paths, viewpoints, and seating areas, while still preserving its natural atmosphere. Commercial development remains minimal, maintaining its peaceful environment.
In terms of tourism, Ranong Canyon is especially attractive during the early morning and late afternoon. In the morning, light mist over the water creates a layered and scenic view reminiscent of overseas landscapes. In the evening, the soft light makes it ideal for landscape photography.
However, despite its calm appearance, the lake is very deep and lacks proper safety measures. Swimming is not recommended to avoid potential danger.
