“ The scripture hall on water is one of the most well-preserved examples of Thai architecture. It is an elevated wooden structure with high stilts, consisting of two rooms. ”

Wat Amphawan is an ancient temple with continuous development dating back to the late Ayutthaya period. It is believed to have been established by a Thai community along Khlong Bang Muang, which was once an important transportation and trade route. As a result, the temple served as a central hub for both religious activities and the local way of life. It was formerly known as “Wat Bang Muang” before later being developed and renamed.

The most outstanding feature of the temple is the scripture hall on water (Ho Trai Klang Nam), which clearly reflects traditional Thai wisdom. The structure is an elevated wooden building situated in the middle of a pond, designed primarily to protect the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures) from termites, ants, and humidity.Architecturally, the hall represents a transitional style between the late Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods, with notable features including:

  • A structure made entirely of teak wood using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery
  • A multi-tiered Thai-style roof covered with clay tiles
  • Finely carved wooden doors and windows featuring floral and traditional Thai motifs
  • A compact yet elegant overall proportion reflecting classical Thai craftsmanship

Today, such scripture halls are rare, and many have deteriorated or disappeared over time. This makes the one at Wat Amphawan a highly valuable example in terms of architectural heritage and conservation. The temple’s old ordination hall is also distinctive, with a base shaped like the hull of a traditional Chinese junk. This design, popular in the late Ayutthaya period, symbolically represents the “boat of Dharma” carrying beings across the ocean of suffering.Notable artistic elements include

  • A carved wooden gable depicting Narai riding Garuda, reflecting a blend of Brahmanical and Buddhist beliefs
  • Traditional Thai decorative motifs on door and window frames
  • A serene and graceful Mara-Vijaya Buddha image enshrined inside, characteristic of late Ayutthaya art

Located along Khlong Bang Muang, part of the Chao Phraya river canal system, the temple is surrounded by gardens and traditional waterfront communities. The environment remains peaceful, shaded, and rich in old-world charm. The temple layout follows traditional Thai planning principles:

  • The sacred zone (Ubosot and scripture hall) is separated from the monks’ residential area
  • Open spaces and large trees create a calm and suitable atmosphere for meditation
