“Tha Thung Na Dam is one of the projects under the Greater Kwae River Basin Development Plan of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)”

Tha Thung Na Dam is a dam within the Greater Kwae River Basin system that plays an important role in regulating water released from Srinakarin Dam before it flows downstream. Rather than serving as a massive water storage dam, it mainly functions as a “water balancing dam” that helps stabilize water flow along the river system. The dam was designed as a diversion and small-scale hydroelectric dam. Water flowing through the system is directed to spin turbines and generate additional electricity before being released back into the river naturally. This process allows water resources to be utilized more efficiently within the same hydropower network. Structurally, the dam is made of concrete, measuring approximately 267.5 meters in length and about 30 meters in height_. Its overall design stretches across the river and includes spillway gates together with a compact power generation facility. The structure focuses more on water regulation than large-scale water retention.

The surrounding area is characterized by mountainous terrain and the winding flow of the Kwae Yai River, creating a peaceful and scenic landscape. During certain times of the day, sunlight reflecting on the water produces beautiful mirror-like reflections of the surrounding mountains. Light mist can also often be seen in the early morning, especially during the rainy and cool seasons.Ecologically, the area remains rich in natural biodiversity. Riverside vegetation, native freshwater fish, and various bird species can still be found throughout the region due to its relatively undisturbed environment. From a tourism perspective, Tha Thung Na Dam is a popular stopover for travelers heading toward Erawan Waterfall and Srinakarin Dam. Visitors often stop to relax, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs because of the calm atmosphere and low tourist density.

However, since the dam is operated within a government-controlled electricity generation area, visitors must strictly follow safety regulations, avoid restricted zones, and remain cautious of sudden water level changes caused by upstream water releases.Overall, Tha Thung Na Dam is both an important engineering structure and a charming natural viewpoint, offering travelers a peaceful place to rest while exploring the scenic routes of Kanchanaburi Province.

How to Get There
  • By Car: From Kanchanaburi town, take Highway 3199 (Kanchanaburi–Si Sawat Road) toward Erawan Waterfall for approximately 45 kilometers. You will see the entrance sign to เขื่อนท่าทุ่งนา on the left-hand side, then continue a short distance to reach the dam area.
  • By Public Bus: Take the Kanchanaburi–Erawan route bus from Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal and inform the driver that you would like to get off at the entrance to Tha Thung Na Dam. From there, visitors may need to walk or hire local transport to reach the inner area.
