“ Large border market with affordable goods, local products, second-hand items, and a gateway to Cambodia (Oddar Meanchey). ”
Chong Chom Border Checkpoint is a permanent Thailand–Cambodia border crossing located in Dan Subdistrict, Kap Choeng District, Surin Province, in the southern part of the province. It is an important border area in terms of economy, trade, and cross-border relations between Thailand and Cambodia, with Oddar Meanchey Province in Cambodia located directly opposite the checkpoint. The area has been developed as both an immigration and customs checkpoint as well as a large border trade market that plays a significant role in the daily lives of local people and traders from both countries.
The Chong Chom market stretches along the roadside and surrounding areas of the checkpoint, filled with numerous shops densely lined up along the streets. The products sold here are highly diverse, ranging from everyday consumer goods such as dried food, seasonings, household items, clothing, shoes, and bags, to second-hand goods including bicycles and used electrical appliances imported from Cambodia and other countries, which are very popular among buyers in the area. In addition, seasonal local and forest products such as native vegetables, fruits, and agricultural produce are also sold, clearly reflecting the lifestyle of the border communities.
The atmosphere at Chong Chom Border Checkpoint is lively throughout the day, especially in the morning until late morning when traders, buyers, Thai and Cambodian locals, and tourists arrive in large numbers. This creates a vibrant scene of cultural and linguistic diversity, where bargaining, trading, and communication between people from both sides of the border blend together into a unique border-market identity.
The checkpoint also serves as an important gateway for cross-border travel, where visitors can pass through immigration and customs procedures to enter Cambodia for tourism, trade, or business purposes. Traveling from Surin city to Chong Chom is convenient via Highway 214, taking approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, passing through rural landscapes and local communities that reflect the way of life in lower northeastern Thailand. With its multiple roles in trade, economy, tourism, and cultural exchange, Chong Chom is not only a border crossing but also a vibrant economic hub that continues to grow alongside regional development and cross-border cooperation between the two countries.
