“Khob Dong sea of mist viewpoint, Black Muser (Lahu) lifestyle, terraced agriculture, and local handicrafts on Doi Ang Khang”
Khob Dong Village (Khob Dong Village) is located at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level on the ridge of Doi Ang Khang, which is a Thailand–Myanmar border mountain area. This creates a complex mountainous landscape with steep cliffs and deep valleys. The climate is cool all year round, with fog covering the area in almost every season. During winter, there is often a dense sea of mist, and in some years the temperature drops enough to cause frost formation.
The name “Khob Dong” comes from the geography of the area, which is the edge of a large valley shaped like a “winnowing basket (kradong)”, and it became the name of this community. The village is located within the Doi Ang Khang Development Project (Royal Project), initiated by His Majesty King Rama IX to solve opium cultivation problems and promote sustainable agriculture instead.
The village is mainly inhabited by the Black Muser (Lahu) ethnic group, who still clearly preserve their identity, including dark traditional clothing with red embroidery, language, beliefs, and a simple way of life. Most houses are wooden and earthen homes that blend naturally with the environment. Visitors can learn about real local life by walking through the village and talking with villagers.
In terms of agriculture, Khob Dong Village is an example of highland terraced farming, cultivating winter crops such as cabbage, strawberries, and mixed royal-project crops. This helps generate income for the community and reduces dependence on former forest resources in a sustainable way.
The Khob Dong viewpoint is a major highlight where visitors can see sunrise over a sea of mist and panoramic mountain ranges stretching to the horizon. The atmosphere is peaceful and the air is fresh, making it ideal for nature tourism and mountain photography.
Today, Khob Dong Village is a cultural tourism destination that combines nature + community lifestyle + sustainable agriculture, allowing visitors to experience culture and nature in one place.
