“Admire timeless, creamy yellow colonial architecture and experience a natural sandy beach in the middle of the Mekong River, appearing only during low water levels—a stunning, unseen beauty in a classic setting.”

The old town area along the golden sand beach of Sri Kotaboon on Sunthon Wichit Road acts as a living museum, narrating the golden era of Nakhon Phanom as a pivotal border trading hub. Most structures here were erected in the early 20th century, heavily influenced by French Colonial Architecture blended with Vietnamese craftsmanship and local ingenuity. These heritage buildings are characterized by their thick mustard-yellow walls, contrasting green or brown wooden shutters, and elegant arched windows designed for optimal ventilation in the tropical climate. The crown jewels of this district include the Chaloem Phra Kiat National Library and the Old City Hall (Governor's Mansion Museum), which once served as a royal residence for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej during his historic visits to the province.

Beyond the architectural splendor, the area boasts a rare geographical phenomenon known as Sri Kotaboon Golden Sand Beach. This massive natural sandbar emerges in the heart of the Mekong River only during the dry season. The sand glows with a brilliant golden hue under the sunlight, creating a breathtaking vista when the evening sun casts its light across the old buildings and reflects off the river's surface. Today, the district has been revitalized into a cultural tourism zone, with several heritage buildings repurposed into classic boutique hotels and cozy cafes that meticulously preserve their original structures. This allows visitors to immerse themselves in a nostalgic atmosphere while experiencing the unique multicultural harmony of Thai, Lao, and Vietnamese influences that define this riverside community.

How to Get There
  • From Nakhon Phanom city center, you can drive or cycle along Sunthorn Vichit Road (the road along the Mekong River). Old buildings line the road from the Vietnam Memorial Clock Tower to the area around the Governor's Residence Museum.

Travel Tips
  • Plan your visit between February and May if you want to walk down to the Sri Kotraboon Golden Sand Beach in the middle of the Mekong River, as this is when the water level is at its lowest, revealing a wide, clear expanse of sand.

  • The best time to photograph the old architecture is in the early morning, between 7:00 and 9:00 AM. The soft sunlight bathes the yellow walls in a beautiful, classic glow, and the weather isn't too hot.

  • To witness the sunrise over the limestone peaks on the Laotian side, stand by the Mekong River in front of the former Governor's Residence in the early morning. You'll see the golden light reflecting off the Mekong River and the sandy beach in a breathtaking display.

  • Renting a bicycle and cycling along Sunthorn Vichit Road is the most convenient way to explore this area, allowing you to stop and photograph the historic buildings and hidden cafes in the alleys along the way.

  • Bringing vintage or local clothing will greatly complement the colonial-style architecture and add a storytelling element to your photos from the Indochina era.

  • The former Governor's Residence Museum and the National Library are usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as public holidays. Check the calendar before planning your visit. Don't miss trying the famous local dishes in this area, especially "Pak Mo Yuan" (Vietnamese steamed rice rolls) and "Vietnamese coffee" at long-established shops, which will perfectly complement your multicultural travel experience.

  • On Friday to Sunday nights, there's usually a Nakhon Phanom Walking Street near the clock tower, allowing you to stroll from the old town area, enjoy food, and watch cultural performances all at once.

  • For walking on the beach, wear easy-to-remove shoes or sandals, as the sand is very fine and some areas may have small puddles due to the low water level of the Mekong River.
