“A popular wildlife spot in Khao Yai National Park, it offers visitors a panoramic view of the savannah-like grasslands and a high chance of seeing wild animals coming down to drink water and salt licks in the early morning and evening.”

The Nong Phak Chi Wildlife Observation Tower is a site with an interesting conservation history and a remarkable biodiversity center in Khao Yai National Park. The name "Nong Phak Chi" comes from its former location as a large natural swamp, which has long served as the heart of the wildlife ecosystem. Although the area was once part of agriculture, after the national park's establishment in 1962, it underwent intensive rehabilitation to restore it to a semi-savanna grassland. This is a result of extensive grassland management by park rangers, who regularly control the growth of invasive plant species to preserve the habitats of ungulates.

The observatory was built to support ecotourism and research. Its primary purpose is to allow tourists and researchers to observe wildlife from a safe distance without disturbing their natural habitats. This includes their behavior as they descend to drink and feed on salt licks, which are crucial mineral resources for herbivores in the rainforest. Regular sightings include deer, barking deer, and a variety of birds, including great hornbills, barking deer, and seasonal waterfowl. During the evening and early morning, the observatory is observed. This is a particularly high-risk time for encounters with large animals, such as wild elephants and gaur. These animals move from dense forests to open grasslands to feed and lick the salt licks. Therefore, managing this area is crucial to controlling wildlife populations and preventing human-animal conflicts, as it provides a reliable source of high-quality food and water year-round.

Access to the observation tower is via a well-maintained nature trail, approximately 900 meters to 1 kilometer from the parking area. Visitors are required to maintain strict silence and strictly adhere to park rules to ensure a sustainable wildlife viewing experience and ensure maximum safety for the overall ecosystem.
