“An ancient Sukhothai-era ordination hall with ventilation openings instead of windows, the revered Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Pan, and historical significance as a former site for the Royal Water Oath Ceremony of Phichit Old Town.”
Wat Nakhon Chum can be regarded as a living historical museum that best reflects the story of Phichit Old Town.
Historical Significance
The temple was established around 1800 BE during the Sukhothai period and once served as the royal temple of Phichit Old Town. Its ordination hall was formerly used by government officials to perform the Royal Water Oath Ceremony, a ritual of allegiance taken before assuming official duties. There are also long-standing accounts of an execution pavilion located nearby, highlighting the temple’s role as a center of religious, administrative, and social order in the past.
Ancient Ordination Hall
The ordination hall features a rare architectural style with thick brick walls coated in plaster and no conventional windows. Instead, small rectangular ventilation openings were carved into the walls to allow light and airflow. This design is characteristic of late Sukhothai architecture and is now rarely seen in Thailand.
Luang Pho Phra Phuttha Pan
The principal Buddha image enshrined inside the ordination hall is a Maravijaya-posture Buddha, crafted using a stucco technique and finished with lacquer and gold leaf. The image is deeply revered by local residents, who believe it grants blessings of peace, well-being, and success in work and life.
Atmosphere
Set amid large shade trees near the old Phichit River, the temple offers a quiet, serene, and mystical atmosphere, distinctly different from temples in the city center. It is an ideal place for visitors seeking tranquility while immersing themselves in authentic historical surroundings.
